About the Area

The Wythe County market represents the entirety of Wythe County. Wythe county was formed in 1790, just before the father of the “Father of Texas” Stephen F. Austin, Moses Austin, took control of the lead and zinc mines in the Austinville community. Austinville was once the county seat for extinct Fincastle County, whose territory ran from Roanoke, Virginia, to the Mississippi River. The mines died in the early 1980s when the market for lead dropped.

The town of Wytheville was established as a planned community and county seat in 1790. President Woodrow Wilson’s wife Edith Bolling was born in Wytheville. Wytheville’s strategic importance is significant and it is known as the “Crossroads of the Blue Ridge.” Wytheville was attacked twice during the Civil War due to its importance. The US Interstate system delivered an important “wrong-way” concurrency featuring Interstates 77 and 81 in the middle of Wythe County. A Trumpet interchange in Wytheville sends 77 North towards West Virginia.

The Fort Chiswell community is located at the Trumpet intersection that sends 77 South towards Hillsville, Carroll County, Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Fort Chiswell was named for a fort from the 1750s, whose ruins were covered over during the construction of the Trumpet intersection. Along 81 South, near the border with Smyth County, is the small town of Rural Retreat. Rural Retreat is home to one of the oldest railroad stations in Southwest Virginia.

The 77 and 81 concurrency has led to a growth of industry and tourism in the area. Kegerreis provides prime OOH advertising opportunities in this area just before the Trumpet Intersection in Wytheville that sends 77 North towards West Virginia. Interstate 81 North provides access to communities and businesses in other counties, such as Dublin’s Volvo plant, the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and the Virginia Technology Corridor featuring Blacksburg and Roanoke. 81 South provides access to Bristol City. Additional important routes in the county include US Routes 11, 21, and 52; and Virginia Routes 94 and 100.
