Sullivan is in the Monticello Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is in the Newark combined statistical area. Monticello is the county seat. The county’s economy has largely been focused on tourism since the 19th century, except for a period between the late 19th and mid 20th centuries when water power and the Industrial Revolution led to a population boom. Until the 1970s, there were a great number of resorts within what was known as the “Borscht Belt.” Famous Old Time Radio and TV comedians, such as Milton Berle and Mel Brooks performed at these hotels. In 1969, Sullivan was home to the famous Woodstock Festival. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, an amphitheatre hosting concerts, has been built at the Woodstock site. The main roads through the county are US Route 209 and New York Routes 17, 17B, 42, 52, 52A, 55, 55A, and 97. The largest communities are Thompson, Fallsburg, Mamakating, the town of Liberty, the village Monticello, and the village of Liberty.
