About the Area

Located in the Shenandoah Valley is Jefferson County. Jefferson is the furthest east county in West Virginia. It was founded as a Virginia County in 1801 when it was separated from Berkeley County. During the Civil War, Jefferson was hotly contested. Before the Civil War, abolitionist John Brown led an unsuccessful rebellion in Harpers Ferry. Rural Free Delivery was begun by the United States Postal Service in Jefferson County in 1896. The main routes in Jefferson are US Route 340, West Virginia Routes 9, 45, 51, 230, and 480. Cities in the county include Charles Town (county seat) and Ranson and towns include Bolivar, Harpers Ferry, and Shepherdstown.
