Garrett was formed in 1872. Oakland is the county seat of Garrett County. In addition to Oakland, Garrett County’s towns include Accident, Deer Park, Friendsville, Grantsville, Kitzmiller, Loch Lynn Heights, and Mountain Lake Park. The main routes in the area are Interstate 68; US Routes 40, 50, 219, 220; US ALT 40; Maryland Routes 35, 36, 39, 42, 47, 51, 135, 495, 546, 560, and 936. The southern tip of Garrett is within the United States National Radio Quiet Zone, which restricts the power and delivery methods of radio and television stations.
