Winchester is Frederick County’s seat. This region is part of the Winchester, VA–WV metropolitan area, which is part of the Washington–Arlington–Alexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Area. The Frederick County region is in the northwest corner of Virginia and borders Kegerreis’ markets in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia – Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties. The main routes in this market are Interstate 66 and 81; US Routes 11, 17, 50, 340, 522; and Virginia Routes 7 and 37. The area has an airport – Winchester Airport. The largest communities in the area are Winchester, Shawneeland, Lake Holiday, Stephens City, Brucetown, and Boyce.
The region has a rich history and Winchester is known as the Apple Capital because it is one of the largest apple export markets in the US. Winchester was once a Native American (Shawnee) camping ground. Colonist Col. James Wood founded the town in 1744. Before and during the French and Indian War, George Washington’s headquarters were in Winchester. After the French and Indian War, he represented Frederick County in the House of Burgesses for two terms, despite moving back to Mount Vernon during his first term. In 1836, Clarke County was established by splitting off a portion of Frederick County. The split was a result of a difference in lifestyles between the large landowners east of the Opequon Creek and the German-Scotch-Irish settlers on the west side. A few years later Clarke and Frederick Counties, along with the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia were hotly contested during the Civil War.
