Established on February 26, 1846, the county was formed from portions of Huntingdon and Bedford counties and is situated within the Southwest Pennsylvania region.

The district is home to Altoona Area High School, which has produced several state championships in basketball, cross country, and track and field. It has also produced several professional athletes, a US House Representative, an author, two musicians, and Betty James (who named the Slinky). The Hollidaysburg Area School District operates Hollidaysburg Area High School. Hollidaysburg has produced several athletes, a film director, and two politicians, including PA State Senator Judy Ward. An additional college preparatory high school, Bishop Guilfoyle Academy, is available for high school students.
Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center is available for high school students seeking trade education. The Center also offers education and diplomas in various career paths to adults.
