About the Area

Berks County, located in southeastern Pennsylvania, is a densely populated area with 428,849 residents as of the 2020 Census. Covering 864 square miles, the county has a diamond-shaped layout. Its county seat, the City of Reading, lies 56 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Although geographically close to the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, Berks County is culturally recognized as part of Pennsylvania’s Dutch Country.

Berks County is separated from Philadelphia by Montgomery County and by Chester and Delaware County. PA 73 offers a quick route to Philadelphia from the center of Berks County. US 422 East offers a quick route to Philadelphia from Reading via itself or through its Interstate 176 connection in Ridgewood to Interstate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike). US 222 and PA 73 intersect in the center of Berks County, while 222 and 422 intersect in Reading. Travelers going east on 222 will discover Allentown and those going west will discover Lancaster. Travelers taking US 422 west will arrive in Harrisburg. Interstate 78 passes through north Berks County. East 78 provides quick access to New York while West 76 offers access to Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. Taking 61 North provides a scenic route to Sunbury in Northumberland County, after intersecting with Interstate 78 in Berks County.
